What can I say, this was a very nice planter to work with! It has a plastic ring on the bottom that keeps the bag standing up on its own, (trust me – that’s a great feature!), so filling it with potting soil was easy. I didn’t have to hold the bag with one hand while filling it. =) Like the other Topsy Turvy Planters, the top plastic ring detaches for easy planting – see my post Growing Upside Down Hot Peppers for the planting specifics. Also, I know I’ve said it many times before but the Topsy Turvy Planters are a higher quality.
Take a look at the difference in stitching between these two planters.
You can see that the Topsy Turvy Pepper Planter has double-stitching at the seams making it stronger, which means it should last longer. Of course, as this is my first year planting with it we’ll just have to wait and see if it makes a difference. Still, it’s the little touches like this that show why the Topsy Turvy Planters are the leading planters in the market.
And speaking of little touches, inside the box you’ll find a booklet on gardening tips to help you start your new upside down pepper garden. It also comes with everything you need including the hook to hang it on.
Just in case you haven’t read any of the other posts about upside down vegetable gardening I’ll go over the basics of why these planters are so much better than conventional methods.
- Gravity fed nutrient system – all the water and nutrients flow downhill from the roots to the flowers making it easier on the plant. (Not sure I believe this really but it’s what all the manufacturers say….I mean seriously, how hard can it be for a plant to suck up water?)
- Hothouse effect – the bag acts as a hothouse causing the root system to explode. (Can’t tell for sure how the roots are doing without cutting open the bag but I can say that the plants themselves are definitely growing faster than the ones I’ve grown before in the ground.)
- No pests – since the plants are grown away from the ground pests have a harder time reaching them. (So far so good – no pests!)
Here are a couple pictures of the front and back of the box so you can read what the manufacturer has to say:
Overall, I’m very impressed with the quality of the Topsy Turvy Planters and I do recommend them.
